CLUB HISTORY
History Of Sporting F.C. (03/07/09)

When did it all begin?
Well in October 1992 a football club had started under the name of GOLDLINER F.C.

For the 1992/1993 season an under 8's team was formed under the guidance of a Mr Barry Whing and a Mr Nick Jobbins. For the first saturday of training they had seven lads turn up. The following weeks saw more arriving and joining the club. Mr Nick Jobbins and a Mr Pete Brown worked hard together in getting the ground which Sporting now play and train on.

The next step was around the corner when a Mr David Hodson was looking for a training ground and facilities for his MARSTON GREEN OLYMPIC team (an offshoot from Marston Green F.C.) To accommodate matches for the young lads as well as footballing techniques, it was decided to almagamate the two sides to form GOLDLINER OLYMPIC. During that season 18 friendly games were played and it gave the opportunity for 32 boys of all young ages from 6 to 9 to enjoy the game we call football.

Central Warwickshire league beckoned for the start of the 1994/1995 season, and because it was a new challenge, a fresh name was sort after. Owing to the behaviour of the boys to be of a sporting nature it was decided form then on to be known as:

SPORTING BOYS FOOTBALL CLUB

More and more opportunities arrived for the boys to play competitive football the following season when a Mr Dave Arrowsmith Snr took charge of a mixture of under8's and under9's and entered the M42 FRIENDLY TEAMS LEAGUE.

During that season the club went under further transition, when two further young groups were formed under the guidance of a Mr Ian Turner and a Mr Ian Shields.

During the summer of 1996 a new under 8's team were introduced under the watchful eye of a Mr Gary Hart.

For the start of the 1997/98 season Sporting added another team at under 7s managed by Steve Sale, assisted by John Abbey and Kevin Carroll and they played in the M42 friendly league, before the introduction of 7-a-side football for the 1999/2000 season by the c.w.y.f.l, advised by the F.A. it was either the M42 league or Birmingham Boys, and all Under 7 - 10s played 11-a-side football. By 1999/2000 all teams were in the central Warwickshire league.

In 1998 Gary Hart left with his team to Chelmsley Town, and Ian Turner left to follow his son who left the club for Coventry City and Dave Crowe took over his team.

In 1999 the club were close to folding as many of the then committee left for one reason or another, and a new committee were formed. In this season 99/2000 was probably Sportings most active and productive, Paul Williams formed a new u8 to go with Steve Sales U9, and due to the change from 11 to 7 -a-side and the amount of players the club had at u9 John Abbey formed a second u9 in this season, Mark McConnell made up a new U10s after leaving Chelmsley Town to join us. Things were on the up the only sad note was Dave Crowes U12s left to form a new team called Sedgemere Sports, due to lack of facilities at Brockhurst, but probably Sportings greatest achievements came when Dave Arrowsmiths u14 became the first and probably last team to win the treble in the Central Warwickshire history.

Year 2000 and another team were formed by Roger Greaves and Mark Levis at under 13s, this was made up mostly by players who left with Gary Hart, so the Chelmsley/Sporting link was in evidence again. Dave Arrowsmith took a backseat and handed control to Dave Hill.

In 2001/02 Sporting added another 2 teams to at this point we had teams at u16, 13,12, 2 x u11s, U10. The new teams were Frank Kellys U15 made up of players from Hodge Hill little league and Andy Lawsons new U8s.

Season 2003/2004 saw SPORTING FOOTBALL CLUB have 8 teams ranging from under 8's to open age with over 101 players of both girls and boys. Dawn Connolly became Sportings first female small sided manager in 2003/04 with a new u8 leaving Gary with the under 9s assisted by Geoff White. Paul Neish joined by replacing Geoff as U13s manager. Another first for the club was Frank Kelly becoming the first Open age manager. At this point the Paul Millard,s U15s folded. Some great games have been played and lost or even drawn! With the new influx of players and managers some of the teams had some great results.

With the last season over it was a quick return for most teams in the 2004/2005 season, back on the training ground with even more new players and coaches. It was sad to see some good players and managers go even some committee members left. But all credit to the new players, coaches, managers and the committee all teams had a decent season. Also Gary Rudge made way for Geoff White to take over the U10s, Andy Lawson returned to U7s handing over the reigns of the U11 to Martin Eccleston, Barry handed over control of the u12s . And Phill 'Fizzer' Wheeler became Dawn's assistant.

Now we come on to 2005/2006, again with new coaches and some new players and even new committee members we are now going from strength to strength on and off the field of play. This season saw the under 13's reach the final of the league shield and gain promotion.(well done to the lads and management). Also we see that the club looses a good manager through Martin Eccleton who is taking a break (Thank you Martin for all that you have done). All Teams had a good season one way or another. It was a shame, when you think that most teams got through to the semi's in all cup compertitions.

Now to 2006/2007 season, will England win the world cup? Well the short answer for that was no(lol) This season saw Dawn leave the fold (thank you for all you help) and a couple of teams not entering any leagues. Geoff White left (moved house). Andy Lawson took control of the under 9's, Phill led the under 11's for a season in the BBAGJFL league, with Carl leading the charge with the under 13's, Big S storming their way through the under 14's , Angie taking the under15's to a final, Frank decideing to leave and handing over to Steve Green under16's and of course SS taking rein over Sporting Rangers. Would it be a good season? Well with 3 teams making the finals Under11's/Under14's/Under15's, out of these teams the Under 11's were the first to bring home the Shield with the Under 13's getting runners up and also the Under15's winning their final also. It is also the season were we see Steve Sale stepping down as manager of Sporting Rangers (again thanks you Steve) he will stay on helping with the child protection. And also this season see's some of the Under 16's go and some of Sporting Rangers also go. But you never know we might see them in an open age group? Lets now crack on to 2007/2008.

2007/2008 was a difficult time for Sporting as we only had a few teams left to play within the Cwyfl as there were only the under 9's/under 12's/under 14's/under 15's/under16's and Sporting Brockhurst. However all did not do that bad as for the first time of asking Sporting Brockhurst got to a cup final and came runners up. All other teams seemed to finish within the top half of thier respective league's. This also saw the last time (perhaps for a short while) Andy Lawson step down as under 9's manager and Angie Connerly leave also(again we wish them all the best for the future). Steve Sale took control of Sporting Brockhurst (again) Big S also stepped down as a manager but is still within the club as the admin officer. We also have 3 new managers come into the fold and a new clubhouse on its way. So 2008/2009 does not look at all bad.

2008/2009 The season the club gets back on track, still with only a few teams within the club they all did not perform that bad to be fair the under 11's had a very good season the under 13's had a difficult one stepping up two divsions but did hold their own, under 14's had a change in management after Carl Left (we all wish him well) Sporting Brockhurst had a little surprise of their own. It was also time to say goodbye to Helen who had been with the club for many a year as the clubs tresurer. The club can now boast the claim of having a new set of changing rooms and some great faclities. It was also a welcome to Phill Roe as an assistant to Phill Wheeler and with the up and coming Under 18's team, Sporting are on the way back all we need now is for some younger teams to come through and Sporting F.C. will finaly be back on the map.

Come on lads and lasses I know we can all do it, all the best for the up and coming season of 2009/2010 ............................now lets go and win them games.
